On 9 December 2022, the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau in cooperation with the Society for Transparency - Delna held a thematic event "Corruption - a threat to national and global security" dedicated to the International Anti-Corruption Day. During the event, officials and experts discussed the fight against corruption to strengthen Latvia's security.
The event was opened by:
- Mr Jēkabs Straume, Director of the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau,
- Mr Edvards Smiltēns, Speaker of the Saeima,
- Mr John L. Carwile, the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Latvia,
- Ms Inese Tauriņa, Director of the Society for Transparency - Delna.
The event "Corruption - a threat to national and global security" was held in two parts. The first part of the event was a panel discussion moderated by Latvian Radio 1 journalist Mr Aidis Tomsons. The discussion was dedicated to the negative impact of corruption on Latvia's internal and external security, as well the measures that should be taken to reduce the role of corruption in Latvia's security. Participants of the discussion:
- Mr Jēkabs Straume, Director of the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau,
- Ms Ināra Mūrniece, Chairperson of the Saeima National Security Commission,
- Mr Dimitrijs Trofimovs, State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior,
- Ms Inese Tauriņa, Director of the Society for Transparency - Delna,
- Mr Prof. Dr. sc. pol. Andris Sprūds, Chairman of the Saeima European Affairs Commission.
The second part of the event was dedicated to the impact of corrupion on global security. Ms Sarah Chayes, an anti-corruption expert from the United States of America, spoke as a guest lecturer about corruption as a global security threat. Whereas, Ms Olena Krolovetska, representative of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), presented NABU's and Ukraine's assessment of the impact of corruption on security.
