The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) informs, that Amendments made in the Law on Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau, provides, that employees of the KNAB are serving in the public service, as it is in other state institutions, which have powers for operational and investigation activities.

Draft Law was supported by Corruption Prevention Committee of Parliament during its meeting on 1st March.

This Draft Law also was supported by KNAB and also by Public Consultative Council of KNAB, which is represented by 16 nongovernmental organizations of Latvia.

The KNAB still is the only one law enforcement authority, which officials are not in the service relations with a country, but are in the legal employment relations similarly as Private Law subjects.

In addition, we inform, that Amendments made to the Law, doesn’t affects the independence of the investigators, because the independence of the investigators is defined in the Criminal Procedure Law.

Draft Law also clearly defines the monitoring of the actions of the Director of the KNAB, consequently balancing his powers, ensuring his legal functions, with responsibility for his taken decisions.

The Lawmaker has power to ensure the political will and systemically to arrange the legal regulation of the KNAB activity.

As well as, it must be added, that these Amendments will promote Latvia’s joining to the OECD.
